What aesthetics do you find in modern/avant garde classical music?

I kind of like it, but I'd much rather listen to something that makes me feel structured and fulfilled. (most of the time, anyway)

First, I have to say, you deserve a good answer or two and I hope you get that result.

To that point I ask you to consider "structured" for you is Familiar Structure, and other things may be just as structured but you cannot, as yet, recognize those structures. They will be more individual from piece to piece, even from the same composer. You can no longer rely on music having one of several set formats when you initially audition a new piece. Repeated listening is a must, to gain familiarity with any one new piece.

Try John Adams' Shaker Loops, the original version for seven strings, or the string orchestra version (conducted by the composer).

Morton Feldman: Piano and String Quartet.

Now: "aesthetics, modern/avant garde, classical music" And then you request don't go artsy on you?

I would liken listening to much music up through the mid-20th century as walking through a house with a layout of rooms, always the same or very similar, with the only real variants being the furnishings, color or pattern on the walls of the various rooms. Hindemith, for example, is mainly Old Fashioned musical procedures with new harmony.

Walking into a newer architecture (form) with a different layout and function can either be exciting or disconcerting, dependent upon an individual's temperament. Some will be very uncomfortable that this new building does not feel at all like any of the old homes to which one is accustomed. Others will be delighted there is something truly new and different. Initially, they will have no means of discerning whether the new edifice is good or bad, because they only have experience with the one, one time only, and have no familiarity and nothing to which to compare it against. That is where the constant exploration and repeat visits come in.
