Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - Roberta Flack, 1971

Original by - Shirelles, 1960

This song was originally written by Carole King about her ex-boyfriend Neil Sedaka and is about love, loss and heart-break and the day after an encounter with a man. It became a huge hit selling over 1 million copies. The Shirelles were one of the first major girl bands of the Rock n' Roll era and successfully covered the song which went straight to 1 on the billboard charts. It continues to be is an old classic which stills gets regularly played on the radio around the world.

Twist and Shout - The Beatles, 1963

Original by - The Isley Brothers, 1960

According to some sources The Beatles recorded their version in a single take for their album 'Please Please Me'. The original was written by Bert Berns and Bill Medley and recorded by the The Isley Brothers who contributed their energy from their earlier reminiscent hit "Shout" and encapsulated the craze of Twist, which was popular with the youth of the day. One defining moment which is very familiar is when John Lennon shouts "Shake it up baby".

Tainted Love - Soft Cell, 1981

Original by - Gloria Jones, 1964

Written by Ed Cobb who managed the The Standells this 1964 classic performed by soul singer Gloria Jones was a big hit. In 1981 it was covered by Soft Cell who blended the soul sound from the 60s with an acid house synthesizer pop twist. It led the way for thousands of copy cat club tracks during the 80s. This cover by did very well and went on to be number 1 in 17 countries, including the US and UK. Even Gloria Jones later commented that she considers Soft Cell's version to be the best.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah, 1994

Original by - Leonard Cohen, 1984

This Leonard Cohen original from 1984 contains eloquent poetic lyrics which evoked a gospel like quality was revitalised by Jeff Buckley who was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Jeff Buckley only recorded one studio album called 'Grace' and later died tragically in a swimming accident. This led to many fans wondering what might have been of this talented young musician. Hallelujah was released in 1994 by Buckley and went to number 2 in the UK charts.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower, 1968

Original by - Bob Dylan, 1967

The Lyrical acoustic maestro Bob Dylan first released the original recording at Columbia Studios in Nashville Tennessee in 1967. Jimi Hendrix later worked for several months trying to perfect his own version which was released on his album called 'Electric Ladyland'. This cover can be described as a tour de force of electrifying guitar work and awesome vocals. Bob Dylan was so impressed by Jimi Hendrix's version that he later went on to perform it the way Hendrix recorded it. In many respects Hendrix's version was more successful and is considered by many as the best cover of all time.
