How has Bob Dylan kept his appeal for over 40 years?
I am writing a paper on Bob Dylan and am trying to conduct my own research. I am interested in how Dylan initially appealed to you, and possibly kept your interest. You don't need to know a lot about Dylan or be his number one fan, just enjoy his music. Please include a general idea of time, whether it be in the 60's or at his concert last week.

I am a lifelong Bob Dylan fan and have been since I first heard him in the early 60's. It's difficult to say just exactly what is the appeal, but I think it's the whole package. The music, for a start, has always been exceptional - throughout all of his different phases. But it's not just the music, it's the whole persona that he brings to it. It's as if he and the music are inseperable. It is always far more than just a performance. And, of course, the style of music has changed repeatedly over the years. Back in the early/mid sixties he was just so different from anything I had ever heard before. When The Times They Are A-Changin' appeared on Top of the Pops it was just nothing like anything else on there. Sure, there have always been folk songs, but not presented the way Dylan did it. His lyrics were often complex (how he remembered some of those very long songs I don't know). Quite simply, you knew you were looking at, or listening to, the Real Thing. This was a unique musician, the like of which we had never seen before.
I have bought all Dylans studio albums over the years, in all the different formats, together with a fair few bootlegs. I've seen him many times in concert, some fantastic and some, to my mind disappointing when he has chosen to change classic songs beyond all recognition. But, of course, he has a perfect right to do that and he wouldn't be Bob Dylan - his own man - if he didn't.
I've recently bought the new Dylan album Tell Tale Signs - yes the 3 CD version at £89! I had to swallow a bit, but then this is Dylan and what price art?
