Restaurant

A restaurant is an establishment where individuals can get food and beverages. Food is typically eaten on the premises but some restaurants offer the delivery of their food or customers can purchase the food to be taken off the premises to be enjoyed. The owner of the establishment is called a restaurateur. The owner employs a staff to help run the restaurant. Most employ chefs, line cooks, bartenders, hosts, hostesses, waiters, waitresses, busboys and sommeliers.

The first restaurant can be dated back to the 9th century when Ziryab served three course meals in medieval Islamic Iberia. The meals were served one at a time consisting of soup, a main course and dessert. In 1765 Monsieur Boulanger served sheep's feet simmered in a white sauce in Paris. He believed this meal restored an individuals health. A food guild sued for infringement on it's monopoly of the sale of cooked foods and lost to Boulanger. This was what led the opening of new restaurants across France. The first restaurant recorded in the United States was in Boston in 1794 by the name of Jillien's Restarator. The Union Oyster House in Boston is the oldest restaurant with contiguous operation which has been open since 1826.

Most restaurants served "family style" meals in the beginning where the food would be placed on the table and customers would plate the food themselves until the Russian Prince Kurakin of France introduced Service a la russe in the 1810s. This type of service is plated in the kitchen and brought to patrons by waitresses or waiters. This form of service was quickly spread to England and then carried on throughout the world. Today restaurants range from the simple to the elaborate, from inexpensive to expensive and foods from all different cultures are being served. Patrons may be seated to receive their meals or they will go to an area where the food is set out for them to fill their own plates.
