Contemporary Indian Art – Glimpses Through Time
The panorama of Contemporary Indian Art began with the ignited efforts of the pioneers of the Bengal School Of Art such as Abhinindrananth Tagore, NandLal Bose, Gagenendranath Tagore and later by the eminent Punjabi painter of all times, Amrita Shergill whose concerted efforts provided a panacea of art themes initially hovering around a pure depiction of patriotic fervor colored with a dash of traditionalism to the later representation of a shadowy reflection of a sentimental yet, romantic- naturalistic form of art patronized by Amrita Shergill, the progressives and the Calcutta group respectively. Their efforts expounded beyond the age old conformist approach experimenting with diverse and expressive modalities ranging from the Persian, to the Japenese and Chinese styles.
The art scenario saw the most radical and robust transformation with the formation of the Calcutta group in wake of the most violent political and social upheavals of all times. This gave birth to artists like Rathu Maitra, Sunil Madhav Sen and many more who provided a picturesque of strong anti nostalgic and anti sentimental themes. However in due course of time their impact diluted as artists made way towards the ‘Paris The Artists ‘ Elduardo.
It was not earlier than 1948 when the Indian art scene saw the most flourishing and vibrant contributions made by the dynamic set of the Progressive group of artists such as F.N. Souza, M.F. Hussain , S.H. Raza to name a few who looked much far and beyond rather than just unifying art with a single thread revolving around a limited aesthetic style, paving way towards internationalizing the art's arena providing it a diverse exploratory platform exposing aesthetic sentiments to various Galleries and Museums worldwide.
Later down the time line came the contributions of the Bombay School artists among whom K.K.Hebbar, Tyeb Mehta, N.S. Bendre deserve a special mention who shook the world with their strong impacted individual contributions though, for a brief period of time.
However it was with the diligent efforts of N.S. Bendre, Jarem Patel and K.G. Subramanyam art dawned at Baroda and provided it's students with an extravaganza of themes ranging from the depiction of the daily simplicities of the Indian villages to a more exotic and complex display of Cubism and Abstraction.
As so rightly affirmed, ‘Art knows no boundaries and Artists no rigidities'.It was from here on that art traveled beyond traditional regionalism and flourished in the areas of Delhi and Chandigarh . The creation of the Delhi Shupa Chakra provided a diverse impetus to the aspiring and budding artists such as Arpita Singh, Paramjit Singh, Balbir Katt and Dhanraj Bhagat shaping up their artistic persona with a new vision and a forward looking approach.
Almost simultaneously, Chandigarh became an important hub of art in wake of the sole contribution of the achievements made by the associates of the Chandigarh College Of Art such as Sushil Sarkar, SunilMal Chatterjee, Kamal Nain , Rattan, Jagmohan chopra and Brahm Prakash and it's celebrated alumni's among whom Shiv Singh, Prem Singh, Charanjit Matharu and Avtarjit Dhanjal deserve a special mention. This carved a niche for Chandigarh at the global front which was further accelerated with the contribution of the Lalit Kala Academy and the Government Museum And Art Gallery.
South India remained no exception with the dynamic initiation by D.P. Roy Chowdhury amalgamating the eastern and western ideologies paving way towards a new essence of modernism creating a mesmerizing impact using a blend of figurative, folk, miniature and epic forms of art.
As time treaded further and approached the onset of the 21st century, art forms spread their wings limitlessly personifying it's contribution, perception and beautification beyond the doors of the elite royals and domestic purchases to satisfying the curious temptations of Art Lovers far and beyond.
Art today, is marked by a composite blend of a wide array of mediums, colors, styles and forms showcasing an infusion of the ancient, medieval, regional, cosmic, spiritual, symbolic and surrealistic styles transfigured through the prism of unique creative imagination of artists such as G.R. Santosh, Om Prakash, Wasim Kapoor and many more transgressing beyond boundaries – yet, maintaining the diaspora of patriotism and Indianess.
