Have a Whale of an Adventure in Marine Life Mecca Maldives
Ranked as one of the top five places on the planet for whale and dolphin spotting, the Maldives pulls out all the stops when it comes to having a whale of a time in one of the world's most stunning destinations. Offering marine wildlife enthusiasts the opportunity to get an up close and personal look at a quarter of the world's marine population, expect to see in excess of 20 diverse species roaming freely on the crystal clear oceans surrounding the island archipelago of the Maldives.
The marine life varieties that inhabit Maldivian waters range from the larger than life blue whale to the distinctively athletic Spinner dolphin which are abundantly spotted near the atolls in the wee hours of the morning. As the most commonly visible dolphin species in the country, the Spinner Dolphin typically feeds off shore during the night and spends most of the day traversing waters near the atolls in a daily routine that is almost as predictable as its playful temperament.
Armed with an informative naturalist, most whale watching and dolphin spotting cruises will encompass a rich variety of whale and dolphin species in specific atolls that attract particular marine animals near their shores. Commonly spotted whale species in the Maldives include the sperm whale, pilot whale and of course the blue whale while rarely seen whale varieties such as the likes of melon-headed whales, dwarf sperm whales and the extremely elusive tropical bottlenose whale are also known to make an appearance now and then. Killer Whales are also not an uncommon sight in the islet collective which also boasts an impressive populace of rough-toothed dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, striped dolphins, Risso's dolphins and Fraser's dolphins.
With an abundant quantity of dolphin and whale fauna the islands also have an internationally recognized collection of beaked whales that are unique to the country. These include the dense-beaked whale, Cuvier's beaked whale and the extremely rare Longman's beaked whale. The southern atolls are renowned for schools of over 500 melon-headed whales while Bryde's whales are also frequently spotted. The emerald coloured warm waters of the Maldives also offer sightings of giant whale sharks and manta rays in addition to close encounters with multihued coral reefs that dot its clear ocean floor.
