The question is are there really too many Churches? Depends on perception, weaknesses, strengths and ability to function without them!
Even as the Church was coming together it was being divided as St. Paul mentioned in his letters and today we have more Churches than you can shake a stick at. For what reason do we have so many? There is only one God but unfortunately mankind has never been able to work in unison on anything of great worth that may have consequences for the world at large.
It is any wonder that most Churches are barely getting by with dwindling congregations while successful Churches with positive reinforcement are filled to the brim almost every week.
Personally I believe that a Church is only as beneficial as the enlightened mind of the pastors involved.
‘He will not argue or shout, nor will his voice be heard in the streets. The bruised reed he will not crush, nor snuff out the smoldering wick. He will persist until justice is made victorious, and in him all the nations will put their hope'. Matthew 12:19-21
Frankly peaceful speaking has always been more effective in ensuring a following adheres to guiding principles and also induces them to want to adhere to them. Most people forget within 10 minutes what the pastor was talking about so why go to Church in the first place anyway?
Conscience and a belief that God will not look favourably on them if they do not present themselves in His sanctuary is one reason some people go, others feel it is their duty and others just love the socializing aspects of Church gatherings, others have faith.
The common misconception is that God is only present in buildings of worship, quite the contrary actually if the truth is ready to be told and believed. God is ever present meaning He is in all places at all times no matter where we are so it makes sense to practice His principles continually not just in Church on Sundays or Saturday evenings. In Luke 17:21 we are advised that God is within us therefore why are we not taught to portray his essence as opposed to hell fire and brimstone!
Quite practically it is indicative of ones true worth when it is evident that we walk in God, with God and act knowing He is all around us even in our hearts and souls. It remains obvious He is also in the person to whom we may be ridiculing, complimenting or giving advice to or seeking it as well. We all make mistakes and to stumble is to be human but to make allowances and forgive is a difficult thing to learn and practice.
The Beatitudes are beautiful poetry which nurture one with encouragement and are distinctive of the message Jesus wanted us to embrace. Matthew 5:1-12 outlines them nicely and here they are: The message is one of tolerance, love, mercy and faith, saying yes when one means yes and no when one means no.
Churches need to come together and it is no wonder so many choose to abstain from Church when the Churches do not even know who they are anyway. If you look in any Yellow Pages under Church headings it will amaze you at the numbers there are and if one was to seek out the pastor with the most enlightened message it may take you a long time before you are happy and choose to become a member of a Church. As soon as you find the pastor you like he may move to another parish or district.
Why do this when God is everywhere and your prayers are as good as any pastor and if you need conditioning then study the Bible and other great books with positive reinforcement and watch Church services on your TV or monitor without ever leaving your home. Then if you need socializing you can and may be more selective of the venues you choose to associate with where the people you are attracted to also socialize.
In the Bible we are told life will be difficult but it becomes comforting when we let go and allow God to take charge and this is why I believe it is necessary to formulate your own relationship with God. Then when you are in sync the correct patterns will become clear and crooked places will be made straight.
A true relationship with God is not singular in conclusion or results as it is only by embracing each other with love as our base that our relationship with God is validated. ‘Love one another.'
