A Sanctuary for Winged Wonders in Kerala's Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Often referred to as ‘God's Own Country" by locals the great state of Kerala is indeed a verdant haven blessed by divine hands. Home to lush landscapes and a diverse population of Wild Life, it is no surprise that one of the country's finest bird sanctuaries is also located within its settings. Ideally positioned in the Kumarakom village, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a captivating park reserved for the winged wonders of Kerala and beyond. Located 16km from the main town in Kottayam, this breathtaking sanctuary enjoys an enviable situation on the shores of Vembanad Lake. Attracting nature lovers and bird watchers from across the globe, the impressive collection of local and migratory birds that travel from as far away as Siberia to grace the fertile grounds of the sanctuary is remarkable to say the least. Lined with aromatic lilies and mangrove forests, the sanctuary is flanked by coconut groves and banana leaf hued paddy fields which provide idyllic homestead for the winged creatures that form its chief inhabitants. Birds that are frequently spotted within the enclave include local species such as egrets, waterfowls, flycatchers, owls, larks, herons and water ducks while wood beetles, cuckoos, teals and parrots are also in regular attendance. Other highlights include black, white and multi hued storks, kingfishers, golden-backed woodpeckers and black-headed ibises that are usually perched on the highest branches. The crimson billed Siberian Crane is the most popular migratory reside of the sanctuary by far as its white tufts and black wingtips form a psychedelic sight that has to be seen to be believed. The best way to explore the parkland is of course on board a houseboat or motor boat as the scenic river cruise guarantees stunning views and sightings of the sanctuary's extensive bird population. Guests are also able to tour the park in relative tranquillity without disturbing the environment and its inhabitants. Easily accessible by boat, visitors should also stop over at the Island of Pathiramanal which houses a majority of the park's migratory bird varieties. Those who wish to explore the surroundings on foot can do so with the walking tours organized by the sanctuary. The walking tours typically take guests though a 1.5km stretch where guests can photograph storks, darters, herons and teals that cross their paths.
