House of Parliament- Steeped in History
Also known as the Palace of Westminster, the House of Parliament in London is one of the most recognisable buildings of the city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an awe inspiring, architectural masterpiece which is also one of the oldest structures in London. The very first version of the royal palace was built during the 11th century and it served as the chosen official residence for Kings of England until it was brought to the ground after a disastrous fire consumed the building in 1512. After it was re- constructed, the building was named as the House of Parliament.
Local as well as foreign visitors have the chance to arrange a tour of the Parliament building which will give you an idea of what takes place behind these closed doors. You will have the chance to arrange a guided tour through the premises on the Summer Opening. Tours are only available on Saturdays and educate the visitor on useful facts about the history of the House of Parliament while offering information on various political personalities who graced these halls with their presence in the past. Visitors should keep in mind that they are required to book tickets prior to arrival at the premises in order to partake in a tour.
Attend a debate at the House of Parliament and see with your own eyes how political leaders make crucial decisions and vote on various issues such as passing laws. You will have the chance to witness these happenings from the comfort of the public galleries which is ideally located. Public committee sessions can be attended by anyone who wishes to take part when meetings are held on Mondays and Thursdays. The Parliament Archives are open from Monday to Friday for all visitors; however you are required to produce valid identification documentation at the security checkpoint before you are allowed inside the premises.
