The Inuit are the aboriginal inhabitants of the North American Arctic. Because there are no trees in the arctic, stone was the most common material, followed by animal bone and ivory, for Inuit artisans to carve.
The term ‘soapstone’ often used for Inuit sculpture is not exactly accurate. Most Arctic regions do not have soapstone sites. Soapstone is talc steatite, a soft stone, but the majority of Inuit sculpture is serpentine and serpentinite, which are harder than soapstone. These stones come in green, brown, black and a range of shades. Other types of Arctic stone used for Inuit sculpture are marble, quartz, argillite, siltstone and dolomite.
Those Inuit who use soapstone use soapstone imported from countries such as Brazil, Italy, and United States. David Ruben Piqtoukun is a world respected Inuit artist who uses non-indigenous soapstone.
