Review of Hoodwinked Too Hood vs. Evil
The animated sequel to ‘Hoodwinked!', ‘Hoodwinked Too Hood vs. Evil' is a family film features a stellar cast of voices, including Glenn Close, Hayden Panettiere, Joan Cusack, Martin Short and Patrick Warburton. The film is brought to us by Michael D'Isla- Hogan, a long serving art supervisor and animator at Disney who has now made the transition to direction.
In this new tale, we pick up the story shortly after where ‘Hoodwinked!' left off. The candy recipes have been safely returned to Granny's house, but then we discover that Red Riding Hood is living a training only a short distance away with a collection of heroes known as the ‘Sisters of the Hood'. This heralds the return of Detective Nicky Flipper, one of the most popular characters from the first film.
He is now in charge of the ‘Happily ever after' agency, and finds himself needing Red's help. He's in the middle of a huge case, the mysterious disappearance of ‘Hansel and Gretal'. It's proving to be a hard case to crack and he needs all the help he can get. The two embark on a journey together which reunites most of the original characters. Red even gets herself an unlikely new partner-the wolf.
Hoodwinked too is a fun film and there are a few belly laughs, but it isn't a great film and is not going to be remembered as an animated classic. The first hurdle it needed to overcome is that the whole premise hangs on the fact that it parodies the world of fairytale. This has already been done, and done a whole lot better, in the ‘Shrek' films. It also suffers from the low budget and this standard of animation simply isn't acceptable.
What saves this film from disappearing without a trace is the superb voice overs. The characters and the actors that bring them to life almost make up for the shabby animation and lift the film to a level of above average. Hayden Panettiere steps into the not unsubstantial shoes of Anne Hathaway as the voice of Red. While lacking some of Anne's charisma, she nevertheless brings wit and charm to the character.
The wolf, voiced by Patrick Warburton, gets the best lines and also the biggest laughs. Welcome humour is also brought to the film by Glenn Close and David Ogden Stiers. There are laughs to be had throughout this film, and while they aren't exactly cheap laughs, it certainly isn't the wittiest script ever written.
‘Hoodwinked too' just isn't up to the standard of today's animation that has been taken to a whole new level by Pixar and Disney. It hasn't the polish of other films, and the addition of a few more things would have made a huge difference. Yes okay you can watch it in 3D, but that should be an additional extra and not be relied on to put bums on seats.
This is a kid's film, simple as. It isn't a film you can take your kids to see and get enthralled in yourself. It's a long 94 minutes for adults, and is best suited to a very young audience who won't be able to compare the quality of the animation with other films.
