What do you think of photographers like Sally Mann and Jock Sturges?
Art or porn?
Thanks for your pretentious answer there.... actually I do know a lot about them, especially Sally Mann - she is one of my favourite photographers. I'm just interested to find out how non-photographers view their work.
If you have to ask this question, you probably wouldn't understand my answer. So I'll just keep it simple. I'm not familiar with Jock Sturges, but Sally Mann caught a lot of flack YEARS ago for the series of photos she did of her children. It's rather old these days. Is it porn - NO. Is it kiddie porn - NO. Can people take the imagery out of its intended context - Sure. Subjectivity is a biotch. Did she take those photographs to make some sort of statement - Perhaps, but probably not. If you know anything about these "so called" controversial photographers, the first thing you'd learn is they are as eccentric as any other artist and can sometimes show things that make others uncomfortable. The American society, of which I am part, can be so polarized to sex, drugs, nudity of any kind, and death that it borders on it being obsessed with suppressing such subject material. So I would expect nothing less from such a conservative phenotype as Americans'. They read about this stuff, yet they've often times never been to see an exhibit.
