Puerto Vallarta’S Unique Church Architecture
“Churrigueresque” isn’t a word that folks throw around in casual conversation. It refers to a style of architectural decoration inspired by the Churriguera family in Spain, a style that found its greatest favor in the 18th century. In other words, it’s not likely to be an important design element in modern vacation rentals in Puerto Vallarta. How is it, then, that this intimidating term finds its way into a conversation about the resort city on Banderas Bay?
Style and tradition
It’s like this: Our Lady of Guadalupe church is one of the most popular and loveliest attractions in Puerto Vallarta. Everything about it suggests to the visitor that this structure is what Mexican religious tradition is all about. Funny thing is, workers didn’t even start working on Our Lady until the early 20th century; that’s right – its tradition is less than a century old. In fact, many vacation rentals in Puerto Vallarta were standing before the finishing touches were put on the front of the church in 1987.
Still looking for the “C” word? That’s going to require an extremely brief and grossly simplified stroll through history, architectural and otherwise. It begins at the point where Spanish explorers discovered vast deposits of precious metal. At one time, the region known as New Spain (modern Mexico) produced a tremendous amount of wealth for Spain in the form of silver, and that wealth was reflected in the splendor of its churches.
All that glitters
During the late 17th and 18th centuries, an architectural style developed in the Americas, mixing elements of European Baroque, Moorish and American Indian influence. Called Mexican Baroque, components of this style are evident in many churches built in the 1700s: several of them display massive twin towers that anchor the corners of the structure’s front; a stucco exterior; and elaborate decorative detail, adapted from the Churrigueresque style. These lovely structures are evidence of the power of the Catholic Church in colonial Mexico.
So much for history. Take a critical look at images of older churches in Mexico, especially those in Mexico’s silver regions, where the wealth coming out of the mines financed the construction of lavish churches. Now, compare those images to Our Lady of Guadalupe church in Puerto Vallarta; it is unmistakably a church in the Mexican style, but it doesn’t quite fit in with the Mexican Baroque. In place of massive twin towers, it boasts a splendid central bell tower topped with an ornate crown, and no stucco hides its brick and stone exterior.
