Is There Something Extra In Your Bottle of Omega 3 Fish Oil That You Should Know About?
For time to time I enjoy browsing the isles of my local superstore to look for new natural health and wellness products and check to see whether their might be any bargains to be had. Of course during these scouting trips I always make sure to take along my trusty reading glasses. The reason for this is if there is one thing I have learned in my many years in the natural health industry is that you normally get what you pay for, and the gotchas are normally buried in print so small that a superhero would have trouble reading it.
So on my latest scouting trip and fact finding mission I was mainly focusing in on omega fish oil supplements. The very first bottle I picked up had a great price point and touted heart heath.
At first I thought this just might be love at first site but then I came to senses and remembered what my grandfather used to say about if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. This prompted the reading glasses to be unleashed on the label specifics.
The label proudly proclaimed that it contained no gluten, no lactose, no artificial color, no artificial flavors, and stated that it contained 99.99 percent purified fish oil.
Do you see the problem here? It didn't say that it had a purity level of 99.99 percent rather the product contained 99.99 percent purified fish oil. So in reality we really don't know the exact purity.
Why does this matter? The reason is that most fish, and oceans for that matter, are polluted with mercury, toxins, and PCBs. The pollution will make eventually make its way into the fish, which in turn ends up in our fish oil. So the purification process is another important part of the fish oil puzzle and should be taken very seriously. After all taking a supplement that is full of mercury and other pollutants just doesn't make good sense.
The next potential problem I see is listed under ingredients. The product lists the ingredients as fish oil concentrate, gelatin glycerin, purified water, and natural mixed tocopherois.
Do you see the problem here? I bet you do! What the heck does fish oil concentrate mean. Was it refrigerated? Where was it stored? How long did the concentrate sit before it was used? All of these question will have a bearing on whether the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) we have paid for with our hard earning money still retains enough potency left to deliver the anti-inflammatory benefits promised.
The third and final problem I see is listed under heading of this product contains. Listed are anchovy, sardines, and SOY! Yips, I thought I was buying omega 3 fish oil not tofu!
We all know that soy has it health advantages but what we are hoping to find when purchasing omega 3 fish oil products is a high concentration of DHA and to lesser degree EPA.
According to the American Heart Association it takes between 650 and 900 milligrams of DHA/EPA to get the cardiovascular benefits of omega 3 fish oil.
The problem with adding soy to our omega 3 fish oil is that it contains another omega 3 fatty acid known as alpha-linolenic acid which must be converted by the body into DHA and EPA. In the conversion process much of the beneficial omega 3 fatty acids will be lost, by some estimated as much as 93 percent. Once the soy has been dragged through the body's conversion process there will be little benefit from the tiny amount of soy converted.
In conclusion, you must keep a watchful eye when buying natural health products these days. Retailers understand that the consumer will typically buy for price if they perceive value. There way of doing this is by artfully phrasing catch phrases in a way that is similar, both in meaning and in actually print.
