Most artists begin with the work of art itself, and see what it suggests in terms of frame and matting choices. Your preference as to art framing supplies could depend on whether the artwork is a photograph or a painting. While paintings traditionally utilize picture framing supplies that include polished wood frames that are stained to complement the painting and mat, photographs are often framed in slender black metal frames. The width of any mat is a choice that the artist must contemplate as well. After you have gone to the work of creating a masterpiece, you do not want it hidden behind the thick edges of a mat. However, a wider mat helps to hold the artwork in place within the parameters of the frame. Mats are one of several art framing supplies that come in a variety of sizes. Because mats are available in different sizes and with different openings, you can select one that hides the edges of your artwork the least while being wide enough to hold the art in place and cover any of the many picture framing supplies such as mounting tissues or photo corners that you might use to attach the art to the mount board.
Art galleries will typically frame their photographic exhibitions, focusing on art framing supplies which include black metal frames with white mats, in order to allow the artwork to take center stage. This might be a technique that you choose to follow when you select photo framing supplies, or you might decide to break with tradition if you have created an edgy new photographic series.
