This part of the US has a well-developed tourism and hospitality industry so visitors of all backgrounds, purposes and budgets could find something to suit their needs. For holiday visitors, the Mississippi River offers a lot of water fun and activities.
What better way to rediscover the beauty and history of the American heartland than to go on a cruise down the Mississippi River? Enjoy the scenic view of the Upper Mississippi River valley and take photographs of various birds that flock to this part of the Midwest. Meets flocks of great blue herons, bald eagles and pretty pelicans on an idyllic cruise down the river and be fascinated with the Monument of Julian Dubuque and other historic landmarks visible on board your cruise ship.

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is certainly a must-see. Adults and children enjoy the sampling of the Midwest fauna that the museum keeps and its outdoor park where large artifacts are displayed. If walking through the museum viewing one display to the next makes you want to chill and relax for a bit, you can do so over a cup of coffee at the café. Home to several permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum gives you a visual account of a huge portion of the history of the American Midwest.
And what is a great river without fish and fishing? The Mississippi River is a fisherman's playground, whether you do it for a living or simply for fun. Said to be the best place on earth for cat fishing, the Mississippi and its tributaries are bursting alive with multiple species of catfish. And not surprisingly, fishing is one of the best winter activities in this part of the United States.
After all these fun aquatic trips, you can finish off your holiday trip to the Mississippi by combing through towns that run along its length. These small towns are treasure coves for antiques and collectibles. You'll find all sorts of old things sold in the various nooks and crooks of the small towns decking both sides of the Mississippi.
See and be amazed at the beautifully-crafted pottery, elaborate glassware and furniture from the late 19th to the early 20th century are tucked in these small towns. If you're digging for great finds, bring your bag of curiosity and a full luggage of exuberant sense of adventure.
