A good photographer will work with you and help you capture an image that is pleasing to you. If you are unsatisfied, many portrait studios will offer retake options and touch-ups. It is very important to be up front with your photographer; while they are trained professionals, you are the ones buying the pictures!
The price for a portrait will vary, but please keep in mind that you get what you pay for! Factors like complexity and size will also come into play. A large portrait is going to be pricier than a series of smaller wallet-sized shots, and you will also have choices to make on things like the final portrait finish.
