The Legend that is Jack Vettriano
It is not very often that an artist gets the opportunity to review another artist's work and when that artist is Jack Vettriano it is truly an honour and a priveledge.
Jack Vettriano was born Jack Hoggan 17 November 1951 in Fife, Scotland. He was the youngest of two children and left school at sixteen in order to pursue a career as a mining engineer. He discovered painting accidentally, as he received a set of watercolours from a girlfriend as a twenty first birthday present. Consequently, he decided to teach himself how to paint by studying and copying paintings from well known artists, enabling him to discover his own sense of style.
Vettriano's first painting was a copy of Monet's poppy fields – still signed with the name Jack Hoggan. In 1988, Jack changed his name to Jack Vettriano, by adopting his mothers maiden name, and adding an "a" to it. His work first came to public prominence at the Royal Scottish Academy open exhibition in 1988. Since then there have been sell out exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and New York.
In 2003, Jack Vettriano was awarded an Honorary doctorate from St Andrew's University and an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts. In April 2004, his painting The Singing Butler was sold at Sotheby's for in excess of £700,000 a record breaking price for a painting by a Scottish artist.
But no modern artist divides opinion like Jack Vetrriano. It seems that the public cannot get enough of his work: it is estimated that he makes over £200,000 every year from posters and prints of his work, and celebrities such as Jack Nicholson, Robbie Coltrane and Terence Conran queue up to buy his work and sing his praises.
The critical establishment, on the other hand, is less enthusiastic. Prominent critics have described his work as "pornographic", dismissing it with comments such as, 'he's welcome to paint, as long as nobody takes him seriously'. Is this merely snobbery and fear in action, or do the critics have a valid point?
There is no doubt that Jack Vettriano is hugely successful and has become even more so since setting up his own publishing company - Heartbreak Publishing. His most famous painting, The Singing Butler, sells more posters in the UK than any other work of art, including the more critically-acclaimed works of artists such as Van Gogh. Runner-up in the poster sales chart is a similar Vettriano work, Mad Dogs. He has enjoyed similar success around the world, especially in Japan and the USA.
The type of comments recieved by the upper echelons of the art world include - "dim erotica", "badly concieved soft porn", "flat", "soulless" and "no more than colouring in". Perhaps rather harsh for a Man Who has sold so much but then again his later works are darker and more sexually charged. But it is clear that Vettriano craves acceptance by the art establishment. 'Show me the artist,' he has said, 'who does not want to be recognised by his peers, and I will show you a liar.'
But at the end of the day whether you love him or loathe him you cann't beat his honesty. "I just consider myself a trader," Vettriano said. "I take my goods to the marketplace and try to get the best price I can."
The greater glory of art doesn't come into it, he confirms. "That's not why I paint," he said. "It's wall decoration for me, I don't regard it as this big meaningful thing. My subjects are men and women getting off, that's all."
It is hard to find an artist more scorned, mocked and abused by established critics. Vettriano's images are enigmatic moments from an imaginary, half-remembered movie. Whether from a windswept romance or a dark erotic thriller, these scenes intrigue with hints of a story that can't quite be worked out.
The scene is set, you build the story.
That works for me every time.
