Mount Vernon, Home of Our First President
Mount Vernon is the home of George Washington. The place seems to be a Mecca for tourists who want to visit the home of our first president. At least 2,000 visit the house and grounds per day. Each of the rooms of the house is manned by a docent who gives the history of the room and magnifies the heroic legend, not the man, of George Washington. Allegedly, when he moved to the estate with Martha Parke Custis and her two children, he expanded the already present one story house. He removed the roof and added an additional story and a half. Later he added the private quarters, which included the master bedroom and private stairwells from the main floor to the third floor. Finally he built the two story formal dining-ballroom. The reason I have not believing this story is because standing at six feet two and a half inches Washington built his home with low doorways and staircases low enough to bump his head each time he went down it. Any architect would build his own house to his own height requirements. Other dependency buildings seemed to be oddly located. Not enough credit is give to Martha Washington, who ran the plantation, while George was away fighting the War and serving as President. Perhaps someday someone will raise Martha to the stature of the heroic woman, which she was.
Drove the eight miles West along the Potomac River on Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway to Alexandria. All along the road is a paved two lane bicycle/hiking trail. There was more traffic on the trail than on the Parkway: Bikers, joggers, walkers, etc.
