Surreal Paris
What is Surrealism?
At the end of World War One, the Dada movement wished to attack and offend society because of the monstrosity that the world had become. Dadaists believed that a world which had done it’s utmost to eat itself did not deserve Fine Art so they decided to give it hideousness. Bizarrely, society embraced this anti-art, they saw it as not attacking them as such but attacking the old, staid institutions such as feudalism and the Church. So to the dismay of the Dadaists, their desire to destruct by art failed, their art was embraced and therefore became the art of the day, the statues quo; to their horror they achieved greatness and produced art that was judged to be great. Surrealism inherited its anti-rationalist sensibility from Dada, but was lighter in spirit than that movement. It was heavily influenced by the emerging psychoanalytic theories of Jung and Freud on our perceptions of reality. It was officially founded by Andre Breton in Paris in 1924 with his Manifesto of Surrealism; it’s principal aim was to merge the contradictory notions of dream and reality into an absolute reality - super reality. It’s members viewed the movement as a philosophy, even a religion in it’s aims and practices. Members of the movement could even be flung out of it, if they did not abide by the rules and conventions, such as happened Salvador Dali in 1937. Breton even developed a political programme for the improvement of society, however it proved too jarring with the major Surrealist aim of exploring and liberating the creative powers of the unconscious mind.
The Surrealists wanted art to be something that you marvelled and wondered at, they searched for skewed visions of imagination. They took their inspiration from previous artists who had tampered with the normal convention, artists peccants such as - Bosch’s depictions of hell, the black period of Goya and the nightmarish visions of Fuseli. They saw themselves as inheritors of the Symbolists, deriding the Impressionists as too naturalistic, too rational. Similarly, they thought Cubism to be too logical, too mathematical; though they revered Picasso, to them he was a breed apart. Indeed, Picasso could not be contained by Surrealism, he contributed work to it but he also transcended it as did Miro and Klee. The thing is there was no dominant painting style in Surrealism, though there were tendencies. These tendencies included discovering imagery by chance, tampering with the vision, using techniques such as frottage (rubbing), grattage (scraping) and fumage (smoking). A second tendency, called Veristic Surrealism was the depiction of dreams. A third tendency was automatic panting, where the artist allowed his instrument to rove the canvas without rationally thinking what he was doing. The invasion of the Nazis into France in 1940, forced many Surrealists to flee, many shoring up in New York, where instead of flourishing, the movement declined as people’s attentions began to turn more to Abstract Expressionism. There is no clear consensus as to when the end of the Surrealist movement occurred, some consider it have been during World War II, others with the death of Breton in 1966 and some claim that it was with the death of Dali in 1989.
