The White Tiger By Aravind Adiga
In the Darkness, "the rarest of animals – the creature that comes along only once in a generation," (50) came to existence. Considering himself as "half-baked", constantly reminded of the hierarchical system and the poverty he has grown in, Balram, the "White Tiger", began his slow, but inevitable transformation from a "sweet, innocent village fool into a citified fellow full of debauchery, depravity and wickedness" (167).
Aravind Adiga, the author introduces us to Balram, an entrepreneur who resides in Bangalore, India through what seems like a transcript – as he is dictating a letter to Wen Jiaobao. It is quickly revealed that he has bones to pick with the current state of affairs his country is in. When the Prime Minister [of India] describes India as a "moral and saintly" (2) country, Balram feels the need to say "that thing in English," (2) which is hilariously revealed as: "what a f*cking joke" (5). He even describes that the Indian Police are careless and untrustworthy at what they do as the poster of Balram has some details missing or skewed details such as the color of the bag, maroon color sandals, and the vague amount of money described as "certain" (27) – a term Balram admits to hate. He tells the Premier – albeit not face to face, but through his dictated letter – that if he was to leave a bag full of rupees in the back of a cab, the cab driver would not take any of the money and immediately report it to the police, to which Balram expresses concern that the money may not make it to whoever lost it due to the intervention of the police.
We are – in a way – forced to feel sorry for Balram, perhaps even pity him, as he faces humilation after humiliation through his life in the Darkness as well as in Delhi. For example, after Balram is hired as a servant by the landlord of Laxmangarh, he is made to wash the feet of The Stork, and is hit on the head when he does something wrong. Later in the novel, in Delhi, Balram is forced to sign a confession to something he had not committed and Balram reveals that servants usually take the fall for their masters even if their innocence is obvious because "the judges… they are in on the racket too. They take their bribe, they ignore the discrepancies in the case. And life goes on. For everyone but the driver" (145). Balram explains the reason why servants are so loyal to their masters. Is it "because "Indians are the world’s most honest people"? (148) On the contrary! He explains, "99.9 percent of us [servants] are caught in the Rooster Coop" (148). By "Rooster Coop", he means that none of the servants attempt to leave the coop even as they are sacrificed to better the lives of their masters. By the "Rooster Coop", he means the Indian family – the "reason we are trapped and tied to the coop" (150). Balram however, seems to be of different stock. In chapter one, he confesses of slitting the throat of his employer – Mr. Ashok. And to leave the perpetual cycle that is the Rooster Coop is to be "prepared to see his family destroyed…" (150) From that we can gather that Balram, in order to advance in life, has given up his family, his past, the Darkness. Although Balram has committed an unforgivable act of treason, one cannot help but root for him as he forcibly makes his way into the realm of entrepreneurship, individuality, and freedom, escaping a life of servitude and humility.
The author seems to make a point that this is a piece in which Balram reflects upon himself as he tries to tell the Premier of China the truth about India. Balram constantly comments on his previous actions and thoughts and one begins to feel that the narrating Balram believes that the past Balram was naïve and foolish to have thought like a servant. After signing the confession, he notes that he had never thought once to tell the judge the truth and believed that The Stork had come to save him from the false confession. (151 – 152) Only after Pinky Madam had pointed out Balram’s stained teeth and groin scratching did he begin to question himself. (128) He questions the manner in which his father had raised him, and concludes with the present Balram reflecting with "if only a man could spit his past out so easily," (128) expressing resentment of his previous life.
Throughout the novel, we can see that Balram’s personality changes dramatically. From the boy that feared lizards, the temple and unquestioning nature, he transforms into a man capable of murder. He overcomes the fear of the temple, which he discovers only to be in a dilapidated state and full of monkeys. He stands up to his grandmother, to which his father or cousins could not. He begins to question differences between the rich and the poor, the affairs his master becomes entangled with. In the end, Balram becomes what he had dreamed of becoming – a man with a paycheck, uniform and a whistle. He becomes epitome of every successful entrepreneur – a master to only himself.
So after all that, do I recommend this book? Of course I do. Read it - you will be entertained.
