Thattekad Bird Sanctuary – One of the Most Popular Sanctuaries in the Country
Kerala is possibly best known for its hospitality, laid-back attitude and lush tropical landscape. A city in India that is the epitome of calm and collected is the place to be if you want to stop a while and enjoy the smell of roses. A veritable natural treasure trove with cliffs, rivers and waterways that meander a lazy path through Kerala, is a city rich in tradition, culture and courtesy.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is one place that pays homage to Kerala's rich natural landscape. Founded in 1983 by Dr. Salim Ali, it is well-known as one of the most attractive and spectacular sanctuaries in India. It did not earn its name as being the ‘richest bird habitat' apart from the Himalayas during that time for nothing. This 25 sq km area is home to over 500 different species of birds, many of them exotic and indigenous. Tropical evergreen trees provide a safe covering and ample rainfall means that the surrounding area is always fertile and green.
The bee-eater, black winged kite, falcon grey, Ceylon frogmouth, night heron, jungle fowl and crimson-throat barbet are just a few of the many types of birds witnessed within this area. Because of this vast collection, this sanctuary is not only one of the most famous landmarks in the city, but a veritable haven for bird watchers the world over. Birds are not the only species that have made this land home. The sloth bear, elephants, reptiles, porcupines and leopards among others have also managed to find sanctuary within these boundaries. The abundant vegetation filled with rosewood, mahogany and teak is also noteworthy and make for a wonderful blanket that protects life within the sanctuary.
