Join In The Battle With Real Lightsabers
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, George Lucas unleashed his space saga, Star Wars, upon the world. It is hard to believe that it has been just over thirty years have passed since we have been introduced to the Jedi and their adversaries, the Empire. It seems merely moments ago that we first witnessed the epic Star Wars lightsabers battle between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
It is well known that George Lucas was versed in mythology and in symbolism, and that he discussed his story with Joseph Campbell. Perhaps this is why he drew upon the symbolism of a sword of light as the weapon of the powerful and honorable Jedi order. Instead of giving them simply blasters, or making the lightsaber a weapon that anyone could use, Lucas decided to use the sword to represent the Jedi's oath to keep the peace and to protect the weak and uphold justice through out the galaxy.
The lightsaber, we learn, is a weapon that takes dexterity, strength and mastery of the use of the Force to be able to wield it well. We watch in wonder as Luke Skywalker learns to master the weapon from his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi in the first movie. Throughout the rest of the Star Wars saga, we see many epic battles, between the Jedi and the Sith who oppose them.
A lightsaber's hilt features one jewel, a part of the power source for its plasma energy blade. While the hilt is thirty centimeters long, some lightsabers can be up to forty four inches long in total. Of course, Yoda's blade is a mere thirty three inches long.
When George Lucas first tried to create the lightsaber on screen, he tried several techniques. His first attempt used a sword blade that had been coated with a reflective material and attached to a hilt with a built in motor. But this version broke easily and was near impossible to use in sparring. So Lucas devised another way to create the effect that he wanted for his mystical blade.
Lucas turned to an old technique known as rotoscoping to create the glowing effect for his lightsaber. Each frame where the blade needed to appear was hand-painted by a technician in order to create the visual effects that were necessary to bring the blade to life. Then, when digital technology caught up with his vision, he used digital animation and art to create the blades in later versions of the films.
