How do Fender guitars from the 1970s compare to today's '70s reissues (both MIM and MIA)?

I play a MIM Classic Series '70s Fender Stratocaster. I totally love it,I think it's a solid guitar and I don't let the fact that it's Mexican-made give me an inferiority complex. When cost is not an issue for me somewhere down the road, I would like to try an American-made Fender Strat (I'm interested in the American Vintage series, possibly another '70s reissue) before buying it. Reading reviews of '70s reissues, reviewers praise the modern reissues and claim they're superior to the strats of that time (the infamous CBS era.)

Comparison? Hard to compare. I don't like the CBS era Strats. I did not buy any Fender gear during those years. I thought they were lousy. I continued to play my 66 Bandmaster until it was stolen in the 80s. I played a Gibson and a Rickenbacker during the CBS era. So, the new reissue CBS Strats cannot be any worse than the originals.

Finish? CBS went away from nitro lacquer to something cheaper. Everything and anything to cheapen the guitars (and the amps). I had never heard that poly does not fade. I have seen CBS era Strats that certainly had faded. One I was looking at not too long ago, I was convinced with surf green until we pulled the pickguard and discovered it was sonic blue. The finish on that one certainly yellowed with age.

I suppose younger players are interested in the 70s reissues. I am not. I have bad memories of the originals and do not wish to refresh the experience.

May I suggest the 62 reissue Strat. It has a nitro lacquer finish. Great sounding plckups in the 57/62s Fender is making now. The early 60s Strats were great guitars. If I were going to buy a reissue it would be the 62 and not the 70s. Also the 65 reissue Twin Reverb is a great amp.

I just remembered I do have a piece of CBS era gear, my 69 Fender Dual Showman Reverb. But it is an early silver face and still had most of the black face characteristics. In the later years, CBS screwed up the Dual Showman Reverb. Mine is from before they junked it up.
